“The lines separating the great elements of
Nature obviously play a fundamental role, as in Ford’s skies: the separation of
earth and sky, the earth pushed down to the base of the screen.” - Gilles
Deleuze

According to Deleuze, the horizontal lines,
separating the elements of Nature, such as the earth and the sky play a crucial
role in constructing a cinematic frame. One of the images above (Fig. 1) showcases
a residential area with a couple of high rise in the centre while the other one
(Fig. 2) brings forth the totality of a landscape. As distinct as
they are, both the images adhere to the fundamental criteria of keeping the
elements of nature separated quite evidently.
“The frame has always been geometrical or
physical, depending on whether it constitutes the closed system in relation to
chosen coordinates or in relation to selected variables. The frame is therefore sometimes conceived of as a spatial composition
of parallels and diagonals.” - Gilles Deleuze

Deleuze refers to the cinematic frame as a
spatial composition of parallels and diagonals which we can notice in the
images above. Fig. 3 showcases a platform shade of a railway station, Fig. 4 shows
a cell phone tower while Fig. 5 displays a construction site. One’s attention is easily drawn towards the dominance of
parallels, diagonals and the geometrical shapes in all the three images that
constitute the frames.
