An Understanding of Deleuze's take on Shot and Framing || CHANDREYEE HALDER, SRIJONI MITRA

Sets and Subsets

" The frame therefore forms a set which has a great number of parts, that is of elements, which themselves form sub-sets....Obviously these parts are themselves in image "

The lines of trees intersected by a horizontal branch that reaches out to the far upper right of the frame, divides its subjects as well as the spaces they inhabit into not just either sides of the diagonal (Character 1 is predominantly placed on the upper side of the branch while character 2 is wholly placed on the lower side of that same branch); but also on either side of the left vertical tree.

Framing Nature

" The lines separating the great elements of Nature obviously play a fundamental role...But it also involves water and earth, or the slender line which separates air and water. "

Apart from the lines separating the air from water, a very natural phenomenon of the wind has created a ripple in a diagonal fashion that is almost perpendicular to the directional axis of the boat.

Framing Nature

Here, the water clogged on the ground act as a natural mirror, constructing a perfect symmetry without man's intervention to the point that the very distinction between air, earth and water diminish all at once, creating a sense of continuity and fluidity in the whole frame.

Framing the Sky / Geometrical

" The frame has always been geometrical or physical....The frame is therefore sometimes conceived of as a spatial composition of parallels and diagonals "

Here, by negating the horizontal component of space, an illusion is created which gives a sense or experience of height or flight, that is, it almost gives an upward directional axis that accentuates the state of flight of the bird. The sky which is formless by itself, is framed by two blocking diagonals of a rooftop staircase and also by distant houses in the background.

Geometrical / Pattern

Here, more than one circle create an interesting pattern (decreasing in size from left to right), instead of parallels and diagonals, which looks no less balanced or structured than the previous picture.

Angle of Framing / Point of View

" In the fourth place, the frame is related to an angle of framing. "

The frame is taken from the point of view of the person pointing the gun at the victim who is the main subject here. This frame positions the viewer at par with the shooter, heightening the sense of fear emanating from the victim. It creates an overwhelming effect and a view from where the viewer can directly see the crisis of the victim.

Angle of Framing / Point of View

This is a typical point of view shot where the lower part of the body is visible and an indication is given that the absent eye is looking down at the clay cup of tea.

Out of Field
" The out-of-field refers to what is neither seen nor understood, but is nevertheless perfectly present. "

In this frame, the subjects are looking outward at something, whose explanation is neither provided nor understood and yet a sense of a space existing outside this frame is provided in this very frame itself.

Out of Field
" The out-of-field refers to what is neither seen nor understood, but is nevertheless perfectly present. "

Can the out of field be constructed within the very frame itself?

We tried to experiment on this question and came up with a composition that involves two characters looking at 'something' behind the pillar which the pillar is blocking. No sense or information is provided whatsoever about what/who it is behind the pillar, thus creating an 'experience' of the out of field within the frame itself. Thus, the out of field may not necessarily have to be out of frame.
