An Understanding of
Deleuze on Frame and Shot
In this project Pritha and I have tried to put forth the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze with respect to concepts of a frame within a frame, the depth of focus, the geometry of shapes and lines, and the concept of rarefaction in a frame.
As Delueze says, a frame is a relatively closed system where sets, characters and props are included. The frame, which themselves form sub-sets, which can be broken down in an image.
The Frame is geometric or physical in another way. In the first case, the frame is inseparable from rigid geometric distinction. In this photo we can see vertical lines of trees on both the sides and horizontal lines of the speed breaker.
Deleuze's idea of geometry and rarefaction is again portrayed in the image above, showing the electric tubes arranged in horizontal lines. The rectangle shaped boxes add to the geometry as well. The image is rarefied too as the "whole accent is placed on a single object"-as said by Deleuze, which here is a man cleaning the floor.
The Frame is no longer the object of geometric divisions, but also of physical gradations. In this photograph, the frame is dividual beacause the hanging saree has no structure and the light shows the degrees of shadow and light through the whole light-darkness scale.
"The big screen and depth of field have allowed the multiplication of independent data, to the point where a secondary image appears in the foreground while the main one happens in the background", Wyler, quoted by Deleuze "or where you can no longer distinguish between the principal and the secondary", Altman, quoted by Deleuze.
The image above focuses on two characters that we see in the foreground while a lot of action takes place in the football field which is in the background.
Thus, we conclude. Image 1 has been clicked at Creek Row, Taltala, Kolkata 13, Image 2 in Jadavpur University, Image 3 in the Jadavpur Subway Creek Row, Image 4 at Taltala again and Image 5 in Jadavpur University respectively, using an I-phone 6 and a Redmi 6.
