DISSECTING FRAMES WITH DELUGE

A complete analysis on "Frame and Shot" according to Gilles Deleuze

"...pragmatic justification, perhaps tending to confirm that the visual image has a legible function beyond its visible function."- Gilles Deleuze
Frames form the boundaries of an image or a photograph. Frames basically contain the subject as well as the other elements that are used in the particular frame. Framing an image depends on the particular mood, information or the attention point that the photographer wants to convey or portray. Here are some basic frames and shots that somewhat tries to justify the context of "Frame and Shot" according to Gilles Deleuze.

SETS AND SUB-SETS

Location: Uttara Housing Co-Operative Society, Broad Street, Ballygunge Phari, Kolkata.

The image is a high angle shot frame where the leading lines guide our eyes to the only lit balcony and somewhat distributes our attention to the dimly lit window on the right hand side of the frame. We can very well contribute this frame as a rarefied image as Deleuze says, "...rarefied images are produced, either when the whole accent is placed on a single object or when the set is emptied of certain sub-sets."

Location: Blue bridge, Jadavpur University, Kolkata

The image mainly focuses on how the figure in the center leads our eyes to the exit/ entrance gate, when further channelized we can see the several other doors leading the figure, dividing the frame into fine sub-sets, which can be further divided into sub-sub-sets that tends to go to infinity. That's why the content is referred to as a form that is restricted within a frame but never reaches completion.

GEOMETRICAL LINES AND FIGURES

Distribution of Vertical, Horizontal and Curved lines
Location: Kavi Nazrul Metro Station, Garia Bazar, Kolkata

The image is divided by lines that are broadly geometric in nature. Due to the geometrical division of elements in the frame, it can be perceived as a conjuncture of parallels and diagonals and thus becomes inseparable from geometric distinctions. Upon further analysis, the frame moves on from a mere division of lines and starts forming divisions of physical elements.

Location: Sealdah Railway Station, Kolkata

A frame is segregated majorly by four lines, i.e. horizontal, vertical, diagonal and curved and it also consist of shapes and patterns. The image has certain lines that divides the frame into specific zones and each zone is filled with complementary elements.

Lines dividing Nature and Sky

The horizon segregating the skyline with the landscape
Location: World View terrace, Jadavpur University, Kolkata

The image portrays how the landscape horizon cuts the nature and sky, where the "earth is pushed down to the base of the screen. But it also involves water and earth, or the slender line which separates air and water, when water hides an escapee in its depths, or drowns a victim at the limit of the surface." as perceived by Gilles Deleuze.

Frame within the Frame

Subject acting as a frame within the frame
Location: Friend's place, Gariahat, Kolkata

A frame is an enclosed space within which the elements of the image are present. There are times when certain elements of an image also act as a frame within which the subject is placed and thus it is called a frame within the frame. The subject in the frame are the two figures placed by the window and the window being a closed structure, forms a separate frame with a specific subject content.

Point of View

Point of View angle shot
Location: Ice Skating Rink, Ballygunge Phari, Kolkata

A frame completely depends on the angle of framing and the point of view of the frame. A frame is always taken from a particular point of view and that point of view is further channelized through the point of view of the spectators. In the image, the figure leads us to perceive the mirror image, as is perceived by the same in accordance to the point of view of the leading figure.

In films the point of view is not always followed with respect to reality as films introduce a lot of angles and various points of view which is impossible to experience in reality.

Synopsis: French philosopher Gilles Deleuze brings about various concepts on 'Frames and Shots' keeping in mind the utmost variable possibilities that can occur within a frame of any sort. We are guided from rarefaction to saturation content of an image; our eyes are guided through the leading lines which form the geometrical patterns and lines; we are introduced to how a horizon cuts the frame of landscape and earth, pushing down the landscape and dissecting the frame into two halves; we can frame various contents and sets within the frame to justify the sub-sets; framing another subject within a frame helps us learn how to make a frame within the frame possible; last but not the least we learn how to form an angle for point of view image through the view of the spectators.
